Memorial Day weekend Activities

Memorial Day

First things first, Memorial Day is intended for remembrance of those who have fought for our nation's freedom. Make sure while you are enjoying your long weekend, you take a little bit of time to remember and be thankful.

This long weekend is exactly what many of us need this time of year, for many this is the first recognized holiday off since New Years. Now that we're at the end of May, we're just ready for a day off, and we're willing to take advantage of the long weekend. If you are lucky enough to be going away and having a big vacation, we're jealous. For many of us, this long weekend will be a bit of a stay-cation, but that doesn't mean it can't be just what the doctor ordered.

Whatever you do, try to let yourself relax, at least mentally. Give yourself a little bit of time to veg out, even if it's just for a couple of hours. Let yourself get caught up on your favorite TV shows without doing chores around the house while you watch. For me though, I like to spend as much time outside as possible during my day off, and it leaves me feeling refreshed, and ready to get back to all the work piling up on in my inbox.

If it's an option, do allow yourself to fully disconnect from work, turn off your notifications and don't check that work email until you return to the office on Tuesday. A few ideas to get outside:

The Park

If you have kids, head over to any park in your area. If there is a playground you don't go to often because it's too far for school nights or regular weekends, pack a snack and head over. Are your kids are of the four paws and fur variety? Head to a local dog park and let them work out their energy with some furry friends.

Stay-cation Party

Have family and friends who also stayed in town over for a barbecue and games day in your backyard. Play some 500 or a little bit of soccer in the yard, or toss a baseball around. After you eat set up a build your own ice cream sundae bar with sprinkles, cherries, chocolate, you know, the works!

Read a Book

Find a hammock a shady tree or a chair by the pool. Reading a good book allows you to take a mental vacation, and wakes up your imagination.
